Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion

From www.clinique.com:
Step 3 in Clinique’s 3-Step Skin Care System. The moisture “drink” developed by Clinique’s dermatologists to maintain optimal moisture balance. Softens, smooths, improves.

Skin Types: 1 – Very Dry to Dry, 2 – Dry Combination

My Skin Type:
Actually very oily, but surpressed with BHA exfoliator. Results in generally ranging from very dry to normal/combo skin. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive, and acne prone.

Packaging:
There are several to choose from. Bottle, Bottle with Pump, or Tube. I usually buy the tube. Cheaper and easy to dispense the right amount of product :) Travels well too!

Texture:
Some people may find it thick. For me, it’s not that thick anyway. But oily to the touch, yes.

My General Review:
This one is a classic; I think it’s been around in decades? And this product haven’t been updated ever since so it is bland! Paula once call this as an ‘antiquated mess’; since basically it’s a blend of water and oils and yellow coloring :P

I’ve been using this for a long time though :D Simply because the bland yellow concoction works for me! It makes my skin happy. And more importantly makes my, pores visibly smoother! A feat that some of the more advanced moisturizers can’t do.

The moisture level is perfect for night when I have normal to combination skin. On my very dry days when my skin needs extra help in the day or night, I apply this underneath another advanced moisturizer. Face it though, that your skin needs another beneficial ingredients instead of just water and oils. That’s why I always layer this with a more advanced product that contains antioxidants and cell-communicating ingredients (like peptides) is a must for me; mostly in the form of serum.

What Else You Need To Know:
Read other Clinique 3 steps reviews here. I also reviewed the 3 steps philosophy here.

People often think that the gel counterpart of this product is just as obsolete. Wrong! Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel is much more elegantly formulated than the old Lotion version.

Between DDML and DDMG, there may be a gap in the hydration level. Some folks may not find DDML or DDMG suitable for their uses. They can be too oily or too light for some skins. Easy though, there are plenty of advanced moisturizers out there!

For a short guide, Clinique Moisture Surge Extended is lighter than DDMG. DDML is more moist compared to DDMG. But DDML is still lighter compared to Clinique Superdefense or Super Rescue for dry/combination skin (Clinique type 2).

Likewise, DDML is also lighter than Paula’s Choice Hydrating Treatment Cream and Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Moisturizer.

Application:
With the plain formulation, an antioxidant serum underneath is a must. I always use one though, whatever my choice of moisturizer at that time may be.

I usually cleanse and tone my face, then apply several drops of antioxidant serum, then follow with a pearl size amount of DDML.

Sometimes, when my skin is extra dry, I top it with another moisturizer. Clinique Superdefense, for example.

Availability:
Easily available at all Clinique counters at department stores nationwide.

Price:
IDR275,000 for 50ml. While it’s a major rip off if you judge it by the ingredients, it’s still Clinique’s cheapest moisturizer (along with DDMG).

Ingredients:
Water Purified, Mineral Oil, Sesame Oil, Propylene Glycol, Tea Stearate, Gylceryl Stearate, Lanolin Alcohol, Petrolatum, Methylparaben, Propylparaben.

Overall Rating:
4 out of 5. Obsolete, yes. Moisturizing, yes. A classic piece that is able to smooth out my skin texture. Just make sure to combine this with some kind of an advanced product, an antioxidant serum for example.

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel

From www.clinique.com:
The oil-free moisture “drink” developed by Clinique’s dermatologists to maintain optimal moisture balance for skins comfortable in the cheeks but oily in the T-zone or oily all over. Oil-free formula softens, smooths, improves.

Skin Types: 3 – Oily, 4 – Very Oily

My Skin Type:
Actually very oily, but surpressed with BHA exfoliator. Results in generally ranging from very dry to normal/combo skin. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive, and acne prone.

Packaging:
There are several options available. Bottle, pump bottle, and tube. All are made from transparent plastic. I opted for the tube just because it’s cheaper :P

Paula Begoun rated this as one of the best moisturizer with reasonable price for normal/combination oily skin. But I’m kinda confused….this product does contain antioxidants. And I think the transparent plastic will not sufficiently protect the antioxidants’ efficacy. As long as I know, antioxidants shouldn’t be exposed to air and light; cmiiw.

Texture:
Fluid-gel that melts and sinks in super easily into the skin.

My General Review:
I bought this when my skin went through a transition due to a change in my exfoliator dosage. Previously I used Clinique Superdefense Very Dry/Dry Skin (and the likes), and as my skin went oilier, it’s much too heavy. I was really frustrated, and I stumbled upon Paula’s review on this product.

Actually, long time ago, when this product has just released, I tried it on the back of my hands. It dried down to a dry, filmy finish that is not at all hydrating.

But still, after reading the Paula’s review, I went to Clinique’s counter immediately to get this, even though I’m not sure whether it will work for me or not. It’s for combination/oily skin, for goodness sake! So you can say that I bought this out of desperation, and I’m so glad I jumped into the bandwagon! It turned out to be the best day moisturizer for the times my skin is oilier :D

All this time, because of my (very) dry skin, I used very rich moisturizers under my sunscreen. It makes me blot at noon, but at least my skin is properly hydrated. But what annoyed me most is the fact that my eyeshadow used to crack around 3 hours after I put it on, resulting in cakey mess. Lid primers didn’t help (I used Too Faced Shadow Insurance). I never really admit that oiliness is the root cause. I have dry skin, remember? How come my skin is dry, while my lids are saturated with oil?

Fast forward to my oilier times recently. I was forced to give up my rich moisturizers, and try DDMG instead. Holy cow! My eyeshadow is smooth at lunchtime now! A bit of oilies there, but not a biggie. Less oil production in the face too! My skin feels more normal, and it’s not dry at the end of the day. This time I’m able to admit that maybe the combination of my usual rich moisturizers and rich sunscreens may be too hydrating for my lids.

My skin already swing back to normal/dry, so DDMG is currently not hydrating enough for my skin. I’ve switched to another moisturizer (Clinique DDML, currently) that is heavier, but I still use this on my oily lids.

Bottomline: DDMG offers very light hydration. I was able to use this when I have combinational skin simply because I wear moisturizing sunscreens. Otherwise it would have been too drying. If you need something more intense, you’ll need to search for something else.

That’s why I rarely use this at night. I sleep at an air-conditioned room, so most times I need something richer than this.

What Else You Need To Know:
As you may already know, DDMG is part of Clinique 3 steps routine. There is a Lotion part of this product, meant for drier skin. Unlike DDMG, DDML is not as elegantly formulated though. Instead, it’s very simple, and dare I say, obsolete lotion.

You don’t have to choose just between these 2 moisturizer to fulfill your routine. Clinique offers plenty of wonderfully formulated moisturizer. For more detailed explanation, read my review on Clinique 3 steps.

And as usual with Clinique, this stuff is fragrance free. A safer option for sensitive skin like mine.

If you’re more value-savvy shopper, I can tell you that Clinique M-Gel (for the guys) is similar to this product, and comes with a considerably cheaper pricetag.

If Clinique is your choice for moisturizer: Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief is even lighter compared to DDMG. In contrast, Superdefense for Oily Skin packs more moisturizing power compared to DDMG.

Many people compared DDMG to Paula’s Choice Skin Balancing Gel. I think PC SB Gel is more moisturizing compared to DDMG. The texture is very pleasant serum-like, while DDMG is very light fluid-gel.

Availability:
Widely available. Just visit your nearest Clinique counters in department stores like SOGO or Metro.

Price:
I bought the 50ml tube for IDR275,000. Cheap by Clinique’s standard, and it has lasted me months.

Worth the money, but it retails for USD12 only in USA. What a difference! I feel ripped off by Clinique Indonesia @.@;;

Ingredients:
Water (Aqua Purificata) Purified, Dimethicone, Isododecane, Butylene Glycol, Bis-Peg-18 Methylether, Dimethyl Silane, Glycerin, Laminaria Saccharina Extract, Saccharomyces Lysate Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Hordeum Vulgare (Barley) Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seedcake, Caffeine, Trehalose, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria), Polysilicone-11, Silica, Propylene Glycol Dicaprate, Oleth-10, Laureth-23, Laureth-4, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/vp Copolymer, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Disodium-Edta, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Yellow 5, Red 4, Yellow 6.

Overall Rating:
4 out of 5. My definite favorite daytime moisturizer, but I was kinda worried the transparent packaging would destroy the antioxidants. If Clinique is willing to change the packaging into some opaque tube like it did with Clinique Super Rescue Antioxidant Moisturizer, than I won’t hesistate to give this a perfect 5.

And as a personal bonus: it makes my eye makeup looks (much) better! :P

Clinique 3 Steps

Clinique 3 Steps

Clinique 3 steps has (and still) always been one the most popular Clinique products. Many people think 3 steps is the gate to entering the world of Clinique. They want to buy 3 steps as their first Clinique product. To test whether Clinique can do any good to their skin. Which I think is very risky.

Why? Because for me, a long time Clinique user, 3 steps is about philosophy, not products.

Many people tend to think otherwise, maybe because it’s the way Clinique markets this. Facial Soap, Clarifying Lotion, and DDML/DDMG. From my observation, this hinders you from getting the best result from Clinique. Because more than half Clinique’s 3 steps products are obsolete.

So, what are the philosophy/steps?

First, cleanse.

I highly recommend others to get the Liquid Facial Soap version instead of the old Facial Soap. The bar ones are harsh and made of….soap. The liquid ones, on the other hands, are milder. The extra mild version is surfactant free, so it’s very good choice for very dry/dry/sensitive skins.

Of course, Clinique offers some other cleansers, but I’ve never tried them.

And don’t forget, if you wear makeup and/or sunscreen, it’s best if you take them off first using makeup remover. Clinique offers several great makeup removers in the Take The Day Off line.

Second, exfoliate.

Mild Clarifying Lotion is the best of the bunch. No, it’s not the same as the Asian-exclusive Moisture Clarifying Lotion. Clarifying Lotion are alcohol-ridden and much too harsh. Moisture ones are alcohol-free but still contain Peppermint oil, so I don’t care about that either.

Mild Clarifying Lotion, on the other hand, are supposed to be irritant free. It contains 0.5% BHA.

Of course, toner is not the only way to exfoliate your skin. Check Clinique’s Turnaround line for BHA in other bases (such as cream and serum). Clinique Total Turnaround Visible Skin Renewer, especially, for me is the best of the bunch. It’s the one in the jar. Very effective to control my acne.

Third, moisturize.

Choices are even more abundant here :D Clinique will recommend you Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion (DDML) or Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel (DDMG) to complete your 3 steps routine; but actually they’re not the only choices. How many moisturizers do Clinique produce? :P

Quoting Paula Begoun, DDML is…antiquated mess :D It’s only mineral oil, lanolin, and yellow coloring mixed together (and nothing else) :D I tend to like it though! When my skin is normal/dry, this alone provides enough moisture. It makes my skin and pores smooth! Something that a lot of moisturizer can’t achieve. On my very dry days, it can be used under other moisturizer to provide extra moisturization.

In contrast, DDMG is much more elegantly formulated. It contains antioxidants *and* cell communicating ingredients like peptide. It’s very light, suitable for normal to combination/oily skin. I use this as my morning moisturizer and am very satisfied with it!

If either one of DDML or DDMG can’t suit your needs, rest assured. Advanced moisturizers are one of Clinique’s specialty indeed! For oilier skin, I highly recommend Clinique Moisture Surge Extended; it’s very light and the ingredients are great. For drier skin, I adore Superdefense and Super Rescue :) Judging from the ingredient list, each of these can even be labeled as ‘anti-aging’ products :)

Be aware though, that I will always use antioxidant serum under all my moisturizer to boost up skin’s protection level. I usually use Paula’s Choice. Clinique supposed to have some great serums too, it’s just that I haven’t get around to test them out.

All in all, I wholeheartedly agree in the philosophy of 3 steps: that you’ll need to cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize. For me, the right products to get the job done can really yield great result. And the right products may not come from products marketed for 3 steps (i.e. faciap soap, clarifying lotion, DDML/DDMG). Any other well formulated cleanser, exfoliator, and moisturizer can get the job done, so please don’t limit your choices to 3 steps products.

Hope this little article can help people who are new to Clinique!
