MAC Cleanse Off Oil

Just a quick update of my previous review of MAC Cleanse Off Oil :) At that time my skin was too dry for this product, but now my skin has bounced back to normal/combination and this cleansing oil is great :) It’s efficient: cleanses well quickly without any greasy residue or overly tight skin. It deserves 5 out of 5 stars :)

Highly recommended if you have normal/combination to oily skin!

Just a quick glance to my previous month’s haul :)

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm

From www.clinique.com:
Lightweight makeup remover quickly dissolves tenacious eye and face makeups, sunscreens. Transforms from a solid balm into a silky oil upon application. Cleans thoroughly, rinses off completely. Non-greasy. Non-drying. Ophthalmologist Tested. For all skin types.

My Skin Type:
Ranging from very dry to normal/dry. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive.

Packaging:
Jar packaging, pretty and easy to use :P

Texture:
Solid balm, easy to scoop it from the jar, easy to be applied to the face too.

My General Review:
This is basically a solid cleansing oil. So this is definitely an option for people who thinks cleansing oil is messy.

I use it the same way I use my cleansing oils. I scoop it out, massage it into my dry skin (with dry hands), and the moment it touches skin, it transforms into non-greasy oil. Add a bit of water, emulsify, and rinse.

I can tell you that i took off waterproof makeup very well with less effort. No oily residue, so no need to follow with another cleanser. But it’s super dehydrating for my dry skin! It only need one application to ruin my skin :(

So I think it’s another Take The Day Off product that Clinique miss-marketed :P

Clinique stated that this product is suitable for all skin types, but I personally think it’s best for oily/very oily skin. Or Combination skin at the minimum.

Application:

  • Use fingertips to massage balm over dry skin.
  • Rinse well with warm water. Pat dry.
  • Follow with your 3-Step Skin Care System.

Availability:
Easily available at Clinique counters nationwide. SOGO, Metro, Debenhams, and other department stores.

Price:
I forget the price in Indonesia. I think’s it’s around IDR350,000 for 125ml. US$27 at Sephora.

What Else You Need To Know:
Other than fulfilling the standard fragrance-free policy in Clinique, it’s also paraben-free!

If you prefer a real cleansing oil (instead of the solid one like this), you can opt for Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Oil. It’s Asian exclusive though.

Ingredients:
Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Polyethylene, PEG-5 Glyceryl Triisostearate, Water (Aqua Purificata), Tocopherol, Phenoxyethanol [ILN28494]

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5. Easy to use, cleans waterproof makeup very well, portable.

Highly recommended for oilier skin. If you have drier skin, approach with caution. The Cleansing Milk version may be more suitable for drier skin.

MAC Cleanse Off Oil

MAC Cleanse Off Oil

From www.maccosmetics.com:
An industry-strength oil-based makeup remover that’s gentle on the skin. Botanically formulated with oils of olive fruit, evening primrose and jojoba seed and absolutely 100 percent mineral-oil free. Massages onto the skin to loosen all makeup, including waterproof mascara. Emulsifies into a lotion-type liquid with water: rinses off easily, no tissues required – and no residue! Protects with vitamin E. Skin softening and conditioning. Good for all skin types.

My Skin Type:
Ranging from very dry to normal/dry. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive.

Packaging:
Transparent pump bottle with locking mechanism (activated with a twist). Not sure it’s reliable for travel. It might leak since the lock is easy to be twisted.

Texture:
Very thin. Probably thinnest cleansing oil that I’ve tried.

My General Review:
I was really hesitant to try MAC Cleanse Off Oil. Many people uses it with very good results, sure. But most reviewers have combo/oily skin; so I was really afraid this will dry up my face. I finally took the plunge last week, as I’ve used up my Shu Uemura and the fact that my skin is more normal/combo. And it’s cheaper than Shu. And even though it contains irritant like Orange and Lavender oil; presumably to be used as fragrance component, the list started with great stuffs (Olive oil etc) so I’m hoping that the irritants is not strong enough to damage the skin (with the fact that this stuff will only stay on your skin for a minute or two).

Wrong decision! It only took 3 days to dry up my skin. I look dehydrated and dull, boohoo! It took off my makeup well though.

I may have to sell this, much too drying for my skin :(

Application:
1. Use 3-4 pumps of cleansing oil on dry hands
2. Spread gently and thoroughly over dry face.
3. Add a few drops of lukewarm water to face to emulsify.
4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Availability:
Easily available at MAC counters. In Jakarta, it means SOGO Plaza Senayan, Pondok Indah Mall 2.

Price:
IDR300,000 for 150ml. USD21 at Sephora.

Ingredients:
Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Olive fruit oil, PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, Squalane, Jojoba Seed Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, Rice Germ Oil, Tocopherol, Chamomilla (Matricaria) Flower Oil, Bitter Orange oil, Lavender Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Water, Rose Fruit Oil, Limonene

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5. Weird? Le sigh.

I don’t take away a point since this works well to remove makeup thoroughly without residue. It’s just too drying for me. Will recommend this wholeheartedly to oily/very oily skin.

Kose Softymo White Cleansing Oil

Kose Softymo White Cleansing Oil

From www.webichi.com:
Instantly removes waterproof makeups and dead skin including melanin completely, leaving your skin smooth and bright. Contains Tear Glass extract as a moisturizer.

1. The skin softening ingredient from plant gives your skin clear and bright. Effectively removes dead skin including melanin which causes dullness of your skin.
2. Newly added amino acid mild cleansing ingredients makes cleansing easier and more complete.
3. The texture of the White Moisture series is so smooth and silky, so that it gently cleanses even sun damaged skin.

My Skin Type:
Ranging from very dry to normal/combo. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive.

Packaging:
Transparent plastic pump bottle with locking mechanism. Not that pretty, but practical.

Texture:
Thin. I can use 1.5-2pumps for my face/neck.

My General Review:
I CPed this from Hongkong, and the exchange rate was cheaper then. It only cost me around IDR50,000, really cheap! The texture is thin, so the bottle lasts for a while, and most importantly, it removes makeup well. No oily residue, no overly stripped skin. I tested it with stubborn, very water water resistant sunscreen (Avene High Protection Cream SPF50), and this cleansing oil removes it thoroughly. Nonchalantly cleanses Majolica Majorca Nail Enamel Neo mascara too.

The only possible problem for my sensitive skin is the fragrance. I manage to finish the whole bottle without getting irritated at all though, so all in all I still think this cleansing oil works for me.

Application:
1. Pump the desired amount of cleansing oil to dry hands
2. Spread gently and thoroughly over dry face.
3. Add a few drops of lukewarm water to face to emulsify.
4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Availability:
You can get it from drugstores in Asia maybe. I get mine from Hongkong. Online, you can buy this from Sasa, Adambeauty, or Webichi.

Price:
Cheapest cleansing oil I’ve tried. It’s currently sold at around USD10 for 230ml in Webichi, a bit cheaper on Adambeauty. Refill packs is also available.

The bottle lasts me around 6 months, if I remember correctly.

Ingredients:
oryza sativa (rice) bran oil, mineral oil, sorbeth-30 tetraoleate, triethyl hexanoine, cyclomethicone, orange oil, tocopherol, coix lacryma-jobi (job’s tears) seed extract, alcohol, glycerin, polyglyceryl-2 diisostearate, trilaureth-4 phosphate, water, phenoxyethanol

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5. Best drugstore cleansing oil I’ve ever tried. Blows SANA Nameraka Honpo Cleansing Oil out of the water. Cleansing power is on par with Shu Uemura High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil (the yellow one for all skin types), also with Shu A/O Cleansing Oil (the green one).

Shu Uemura High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil - Advanced Formula

Shu Uemura High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil - Advanced Formula

From www.shuuemura-usa.com:
Evolved from the original shu uemura cleansing oil, “Classic” is reformulated with an advanced High Performance Cleansing Oil system for significantly improved removability of waterproof make-up.

My Skin Type:
Ranging from very dry to normal/combo. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive.

Packaging:
Transparent plastic pump bottle with locking mechanism. Not that secure though, so I’m not sure it’s best for travelling. Even so, the simple bottle is both utilitarian and pretty.

Texture:
Quite thin. I usually use 1.5-2pumps to cover my face/neck.

My General Review:
After the case with SANA Nameraka Honpo Cleansing Oil, I ran to Shu Uemura to buy a trusty cleansing oil. I wanted to restock my old Cleansing Oil A/O, the green one. But this one is cheaper and the SA assured me that it will work for dry/dehydrated skin.

True enough, even when my skin was very dry/dehydrated, this works. Because of this, I’m not sure if it rinses clean without any “residue” to keep my skin moist. What I know is, it cleanses my makeup and very water resistant sunscreen beautifully, leaving soft skin. I get lesser breakouts because of this. And it continues to work even now, after my skin turned to normal/combo.

BTW, Shu boasts its ginger ingredient. Whatever. Ginger is a skin irritant. Good thing I only have it for a few minutes in my face, and rinse it off.

Application:
1. Use 3-4 pumps of cleansing oil on dry hands
2. Spread gently and thoroughly over dry face.
3. Add a few drops of lukewarm water to face to emulsify.
4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Availability:
Of course, you can get this at Shu Uemura boutique. In Jakarta, that means in Plaza Senayan and Kelapa Gading Mall.

Price:
Pricy! My 150ml bottle is around IDR400,000, I have to check again for the exact quote. I highly recommend you to buy the travel or 150ml bottle only for testing purpose. If restocking is what you’re after, you’re better off with the 450ml version. Much cheapter at around IDR900,000.

The 150ml bottle lasts me for approximately 3 months or so.

Ingredients:
Congrats Shu Uemura! Now their US website provides complete ingredient list for each product. Well done! It’s really helpful for sensitive skin like mine :D

Mineral Oil, Corn Germ Oil, Polysorbate 85, Safflower Seed Oil, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Sorbitan Trioleate, Jojoba Seed Oil, Camellia Kissi Seed Oil, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Canola Oil, Squalane, Ginger Root Extract, Rosemary Leaf Extract, Sea Water, Isohexadecane, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Ethyl Oleate, Isopropyl Myristate, Tocopherol, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Linalool, Fragrance.

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5. Expensive, but it’s great. I know I can always come back to this. At the moment, this is the best cleansing oil I’ve ever tried (along with the green A/O version), and I’ve tried Fancl, HABA, SANA Nameraka Honpo, Kose Cosmeport.

SANA Nameraka Honpo Cleansing Oil

SANA Nameraka Honpo Cleansing Oil

From www.sasa.com:
SANA Nameraka Honpo (Soy Bean Milk) Cleansing Oil is enriched with hydrating ingredients: Soy Isoflavones, Soy Bean Essence, and Botanic Collagen, which prevent water loss of skin for smooth, soft skin. No tightness after use. Quick Dissolve Formula allows easy make-up removal. No heavy rubbing is needed to prevent formation of fine lines. Fragrance-free and color-free.

My Skin Type:
Ranging from very dry to normal/combo. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive.

Packaging:
Transparent plastic pump bottle with separate plastic holder to secure the pump.

Texture:
Quite thin. I usually use 1.5-2pumps to cover my face/neck.

My General Review:
I always rely on cleansing oil to remove my makeup thoroughly, so naturally I’m always on the lookout for great cleansing oil. So what constitutes a great cleansing oil?

Of course, one that cleanses well without residue, without stripping skin out of its natural moisture. Having sensitive skin, I also prefer a fragrance free cleansing oil. And if I’m not asking for too much, I want it to be reasonably priced.

Am I asking for too much? I’ve tried several cleansing oils, searching high and low.
Shu Uemura Premium A/O is great and very reliable, yet it’s a bit expensive. Yet it’s fragranced.
HABA and Fancl is fragrance free, has moderate price (almost half Shu’s price), and I think it cleanses fairly well.
Kose Softymo Whitening Cleansing Oil is very affordable, cleanses well, but it’s fragranced.

Each of them is easy to emulsify, and is non stripping. So I tend to think that most popular cleansing oil is good, I just need to find something that is cheap and fragrance free. Imagine how ecstatic I am when I read about SANA Nameraka Honpo Cleansing Oil. It’s supposed to be fragrance and color free. I eagerly CPed this from Japan.

Sadly, I notice my breakout rate gone rather high when I use this cleansing oil. At first I didn’t attribute it to this cleansing oil, because previous to this, I used HABA cleansing oil and same random breakout always occur. But later I found out that I always get breakout when I wear my water resistant sunscreen. I ran straight to Shu Uemura, rebuy their cleansing oil, and lo and behold! Number of acne occurence gone down favourably.

The only explanation is, SANA cleansing oil doesn’t cleanse my skin well. It didn’t take my sunscreen off thoroughly. This means I also have to lower my rating for HABA cleansing oil too. Compared to the others I have tried, SANA is considerably harder to emulsify too.

Furthermore, this claims to be fragrance and color free, but SANA didn’t explicitly claim that this product is alcohol free. I don’t know if this product contain alcohol or not, but it smells kinda alcoholy sharp.

All in all this is a decent cleansing oil only if you’re using light makeup.

Availability:
Mostly in Asian drugstores like Sasa? Available online at Sasa.com or adambeauty.com.

Price:
Affordable. I forgot the Yen price but it’s sold at USD9.7 for 120ml on Sasa.com.

Ingredients:
No full ingredients listed on the web, nor on the full size product :( At least none written in English.

Overall Rating:
3 out of 5. Decent cleansing oil if you don’t wear heavy/waterproof sunscreen/makeup. But if you want superior cleansing power, I think you’re better off with Shu cleansing oils.

HABA Oil Cleansing

HABA Oil Cleansing

From www.haba.com.sg:
A luxurious makeup remover oil which contains 35.8% of highly purified Squalane, helps to remove most stubborn makeup thoroughly, while maintaining the skins natural moisture balance.

My skin type:
Very sensitive and acne prone. Can vary from very dry to dry/combination skin.

Packaging:
Plastic bottle with pump, but I bought the refill only, and pour it to my old Fancl Mild Cleansing Oil bottle. More cost efficient this way.

Texture:
Seems to be a bit thicker than Fancl Mild Cleansing Oil. Can’t compare it precisely because I used up my Fancl MCO before opening HABA Oil Cleansing.

My General Review:
I used this as my makeup remover at night. I usually do 1.5pump and spread the oil to my face and neck, emulsify, and wash it off.

It takes makeup easily and is not drying. It works well even though my skin type varies from very dry to dry-combination (normal to slightly oily t-zone, normal/dry cheeks).

No greasy residue either. I don’t need to use another face cleanser after this.

A friend of mine who have normal/dry skin commented that this product is too drying on her, but cleanses well. On her, prolonged use results in blackhead removal. I can’t comment on the blackhead removal claim, as I use BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) product to keep my pores clean.

What else you need to know:
HABA products are
free from paraben, added alcohol, preservatives, synthetic fragrance, mineral oil, chemically synthesized colourings or petrochemical surfactants.

HABA Oil Cleansing has been discontinued. The new formula is called HABA Squa Cleansing.

Ingredients:
Squalane, Isononyl Isononanoate, Triethylhexanoin, Sorbeth-40 Tetraoleate, Olive (Olea Europaea) Oil, Octyldodecanol, Tocopherol.

Price:
I think I bought this at around IDR200,000 for a 150ml refill pack.

It didn’t last really long, compared to my previous cleansing oil such as Fancl or Shu Uemura. Maybe because the oil is slightly thicker, I have to use more oil to cover my face/neck.

However, the price point is still much lower than Shu (about half of Shu actually).Fancl MCO retails at around the same price with HABA, if I remember correctly.

Overall, price is still a bit high, considering it only lasted for about 3 months with daily usage. But if you want good, fragrance free cleansing oil, HABA is still an option, and still worth it.

Availability:
In Indonesia, HABA is readily available at Shadow Store. I also heard it’s also available in Star Dept. Store Kelapa Gading.

Overall rating:
5 out of 5. Will recommend this product for very dry to combination skin type, looking for an effective and sensitive-skin friendly cleansing oil.

EDIT: Have to lower the rating to 3 out of 5. I found out that it can’t take my water resistant sunscreen off completely, resulting in breakouts.
