DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

From http://www.dhccare.com:
Try this amazing cleanser and you’ll see why it’s our most popular product worldwide. Dirt, excess oil, makeup—even waterproof mascara—and other pore-cloggers dissolve easily, leaving your face a grime-free zone that is soft to the touch. Its unique water-soluble formula rinses completely, so you’ll never see a greasy residue. Olive oil and vitamin E help ensure you won’t see dryness either.

My Skin Type:
Nowadays it’s pretty normal, just slightly oily in the t-zone and slightly dry on the jaw line.

Packaging:
Typical for a cleansing oil, pump bottle…I think DHC also supplied a plastic neck stopper, in case you want to take it for travel.

Texture:
DHC has always been cited as “the thicker oil” around the forums and beauty reviews. Fortunately, it’s not that super thick that it’s difficult to spread around. Yes it’s thicker than Shu Uemura c/o, but it’s thinner than MUJI Sensitive c/o. It’s about the same texture with Fancl Mild Cleansing Oil.

My General Review:
I guess DHC is one of the most popular c/o out there, along with Shu Uemura and maybe Fancl. However I failed to see that the fuss is all about :( Texture wise, it’s okay. Even though I personally prefer thinner cleansing oils (like Kose Softymo), this texture is not a problem. Manageable. It’s not that thick and stiff that you have to use a lot. Around 2-3 pumps will give me oils to cover my face and neck. It’s easy to emulsify and rinses clean without residue, check. No dried skin, not oily and slimy either. Just nice and normal.

So why am I not impressed?

It’s the cleansing power that has a bit to desire. For normal, everyday makeup or water resistant sunscreens it works okay. However when I wear just slightly thicker layer of mascara with base, then I have to rub, rub, rub to get it all off. Not good! I wonder if I use this to clean up a super water resistant sunscreen (like those heavy duty Avene SPF50). I’m bet it will fail me!

Really, there’s other cleansing oil that does the job better out there. At a cheaper price too!

What Else You Need To Know:
It’s mineral-oil free, like Fancl and MAC c/o.

Application:
Dispense into dry hands, then massage dry face to dissolve makeup, dirt and other impurities. Rinse thoroughly.

Availability:
In Singapore you can grab this at Watson’s or Guardian.

Price:
Not the cheapest c/o on the block. S$43.00 at Watson’s. I’ve spotted this for S$39.90 at Guardian though.

Ingredients:
Olea Europaea (olive) Fruit Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Tocopherol, Phenoxyethanol, Propylparaben, Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate, Rosmarinus Officinalis (rosemary) Leaf Oil.

Overall Rating:
4 out of 5. If you only wear thin, basic makeup daily this will be sufficient. But be warned that it doesn’t do bang up job in removing tough, super waterproof mascaras.

Muji Cleansing Oil

From http://www.muji.eu:
In Japan, oil based cleaners are generally recognised as superior. This highly effective combination of olive oil and jojoba oil blends in quickly and completely removes make up. Gently massage 3-4 pumps onto your skin. Rinse with water after use.

My Skin Type:
Actually very oily, but surpressed with BHA exfoliator. Results in generally ranging from very dry to normal/combo skin. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive, and acne prone.

Packaging:
Like any MUJI product, it’s very minimalist yet functional. It’s transparent with pump.

Texture:
Uber thick! Thickest cleansing oil that I’ve come across.

My General Review:
At first I was not really interested in this product. Yeah there’s ton of reviews on this product being cheap and working and non-sensitizing makeup remover, however from what I’ve read, the cleansing power is lacking compared to some brand like Shu Uemura. However during my last trip to Singapore (when I was still living in Indonesia), my cleansing oil ran out. So I just grabbed a small bottle from local MUJI for S$5.90. Unexpectedly, it worked well! I had Sunkiller Baby SPF38/PA+++ sunscreen which have great staying power, and MUJI wiped it clean without problem. I also tested it with my Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Frame Plus mascara, which is pretty stubborn too. Easy stuff with MUJI.

But I still want to remind you all that is product is pretty darn thick. Seriously. I’ve been using the notorious DHC Cleansing Oil as well, which is considered thick by many; but DHC is really nothing in comparison with MUJI Moist Sensitive c/o. Therefore, the feeling of MUJI is really oily compared to other cleansing oils. Stay clear if you’re oily, but if you’re dry and sensitive, try this one. You may like it. Because once you emulsify and wash it off, you’re left with clean, smooth skin, never tight and dry. No residue on me, but yes it keeps my skin normal/dry skin balanced.

In the end, I think there’s a high probability that I’ll repurchase the big bottle. It’s cheap (I think the 200ml bottle retails for around S$12?). The thicker texture means that more oil is needed to cover my face, but the small 50ml bottle has lasted more than 1 month with daily use, so I think it’s still a good value. It’s effective, it’s irritant-free, and immediately available on MUJI stores in Singapore.

What Else You Need To Know:
MUJI Moist Sensitive c/o is free from mineral oil. Instead it’s based on Olive Oil.

I’ve heard that the ‘Normal’ version of the c/o is thinner and less oily, however it contains irritant such as Orange Flower Water. It’s rather in the bottom of the list though, and with c/o you’ll wash it off your face within minutes so maybe it’s not that bad. I want to try it out someday too.

Availability:
If you’re in Indonesia you’ll have to CP this since MUJI Indonesia doesn’t carry it I think? In Singapore you can find MUJI stores in Bugis Junction or ION Orchard.

Price:
$5.90 for small 50ml bottle. The 200ml bottle costs around S$12 if I’m not mistaken.

Ingredients:
Olea Europea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Octyl Partimate, Sorbeth-30, Tetraisostearate  Polysorbate-80, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Sorbitan Oleate, Water, Pentylene Glycol, Glycosyl Trehalose, Hydrolyzed Starch, Glycerin, Pursalene Extract, Polyquaternum-51, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract, Tocopherol, BG.

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5. Effective, dry/sensitive-skin friendly, economical, and readily available. All in one nice pump bottle. Recommended.

Kanebo Kracie Naive Deep Clear Oil

From http://www.evecare.com:
Kanebo Naive Cleansing Oil-Olive-170ml/6.0fl.oz Natural Deep cleansing Oil. Can remove heavy make-ups. Keeps skin moisture and smooth.

My Skin Type:
Actually very oily, but surpressed with BHA exfoliator. Results in generally ranging from very dry to normal/combo skin. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive, and acne prone.

Packaging:
Standard transparent plastic bottle, but what makes it different with other cleansing oils is that it doesn’t come with a pump. Instead, it got a flip top cap.

Texture:
Very thin. Resembles my favorite Kose Softymo White C/O.

My General Review:
After the not-so-satisfying experience with Biore c/o, I switched to Kanebo Naive. I’ve never tried a cleansing oil from Kanebo before, and was kinda wary but reviews from Lotus Palace and MakeupAlley convinced me. And it was totally worth it!

At first I wasn’t sure about the flip top cap, but actually it possesses no problem at all. It may be tad inconvenient compared to the pump counterpart, but hey, it’s travel friendly!

Then when you pour the oil to your palm…excitement begins. The texture was very thin, doesn’t feel too ‘oily’ to the touch (if you know what I mean, it’s not the thick oily stuff). It spreads very easily, hence a little goes a loo~ng way. Massaging it to your face feels very easy, since it’s not thick and the oil moves easily in your face. It melts my waterproof eyeliner and sunscreen easily. It emulsifies very easily, and rinses off clean without any residue, but never drying. I’ve used this when I was dry, until now when my skin is more on the normal/combo side. No problem at all :) Skin looks clean and smooth after using this.

The only downside…is the fact that the oil is fragranced. As usual I prefer to have fragrance-free skin care regimen, but the oil only touches my face for very brief moment anyway, and then it’ll be washed clear.

This product is totally up to par with my other favorite, Kose Softymo White Cleansing Oil. However…Kose Softymo White is even more economical since it comes with bigger bottle. I don’t mind alternating with the two though, both values are still great to me.

What Else You Need To Know:
This Olive version claims to have Olive Oil but I think you can safely dismiss this claim, as it’s listed behind fragrance, means it’s not in there in big enough amount to be potent enough. Nevertheless, the antioxidant property of the Olive Oil, if it’s really in there, will be nullified quite quickly I think, due to the transparent packaging. Furthermore, it’ll be washed away from your face after a minute or two, so no anti-aging benefits to be recognized by your skin anyway.

Application:
Typical cleansing oil. Spread it with dry fingers on to your dry face, gently massage it in until your makeup dissolved, splash with a bit of water to emulsify (and keep massaging as necessary),
then wash it away completely with water.

Availability:
It’s not available in Singapore as far as I can tell? I bought mine online.

Price:
I bought it for HK$58 for the 170ml bottle from adambeauty, international shipping included.

Ingredients:
Mineral Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Peg-20 Glyceryl Triisotearate, Peg-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Water, Fragrance, Olive Oil, Macadamia Ternifolia Nut Oil.

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5. Great drugstore cleansing oil! The texture is thin, spreads very well and cleans very well too. No oily residue. All in one nice price.

This is my favorite d/s cleansing oil, along with Kose Softymo White Cleansing Oil.

A short update to my previous review of Biore Cleansing Oil.

Biore Perfect Oil a.k.a Biore Cleansing Oil

Dropping my previous rating. I thought my KATE Super Sharp Liner was really tough to remove….and it that leaves stain but actually it was this c/o’s inability to clean efficiently.

It was slow to remove my waterproof mascaras, yes. But KATE Super Sharp was even more stubborn and I didn’t like how I must rub and rub and rub to get minimal amount of liner washed out. I don’t need more wrinkles, thank you.

I’ve moved on to Kanebo Kracie Naive Deep Clear Oil, and oh that’s one HUGE improvement compared to this Biore! It’s a much more efficient cleanser.

Final Rating: 3 out of 5. Biore c/o might be alright for simple water resistant sunscreen, but for stubborn makeup, it’s zero for Biore and one for makeup.

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Oil

From http://www.strawberrynet.com:

  • Transforms from a clear oil to a non-oil, milky makeup dissolver upon use
  • Completely removes all facial makeup & oil on skin
  • Easily rinsed off without blocking skin natural moisture barrier
  • No results of skin dryness or peeling
  • Leaves skin feeling clean, fresh & comfortable
  • Suitable for all skin types

My Skin Type:
Ranging from very dry to normal/dry. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive.

Packaging:
Transparent purple-themed plastic bottle with pump.

Texture:
Thin, very easy to spread.

My General Review:
Is there a Take The Day Off product that isn’t mismarketed? :P This was marketed for All Skin Types, just like the Balm version. Once I tried the Balm version, I knew that the Oil won’t work for me unless I’m oily. And I am, now :P Not oily, actually. More moist, compared to the usual uber-dry stint. More like normal/combo skin. That’s why I got the Oil version to try.

Unfortunately, same result with the Cleansing Balm. Only this time my skin was not as dehydrated, simply because I have enough surface oil to compensate the dryness caused by the Cleansing Oil :( What’s intriguing is, it didn’t take my Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Frame Plus Mascara properly :/ There’s still a little bit of mascara residue in my lashes. Weird! Can it be that it’s not as clean as the Cleansing Balm version?

Application:

  • Apply cleansing oil to dry face with dry hands.
  • Massage it in until you see your makeup melted off.
  • Splash with a bit of water, and continue massaging. The oil will be emulsified into milky lotion.
  • Rinse until water runs clear.

Availability:
Indonesia has ceased to import this, I think. So I don’t know about the price. It’s available online like in StrawberryNet

Price:
U
S$38 for 200ml at StrawberryNet. Pretty pricey!  At this price, I’d rather buy a Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil. It’s fragranced, but not drying.

What Else You Need To Know:
Other than fulfilling the standard fragrance-free policy in Clinique, it’s also paraben-free and mineral-oil free!

If you think Cleansing Oil is messy, and you have oily/very oily skin, try out Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm. It basically is a solid cleansing oil.

Ingredients:
Cetyl Ehtylhexanoate, Triethylhexanoin, PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, Polybutene, PEG-8 Diisostearate, PEG-12 Diisostearate, PPG-15 Stearyl Ether, Water\Aqua\Eau, Tocopheryl Acetate, Glycerin, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile), Caprylyl Glycol, Glyceryl Laurate,  BHT [ILN29144]

Overall Rating:
4 out of 5. Nice texture for combination/oily skin, but it’s not that effective to remove very tenacious waterproof mascara on me.

If you have drier skin, approach with caution. The Cleansing Milk version may be more suitable for drier skin.

Biore Perfect Oil a.k.a Biore Cleansing Oil

From http://www.kao.com:
Biore Cleansing Oil effectively dissolves and removes stubborn makeup, including waterproof mascara, while lifting away dirt and impurities. Unlike other cleansing oils, it leaves no greasy film on your face and maintains the skin’s natural moisture balance. It does not emulsify upon contact with water, thus maintaining its optimal cleansing performance at all times. Just apply with dry or wet hands and rinse off with water for that clean and fresh feeling!

My Skin Type:
Ranging from very dry to normal/dry. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive.

Packaging:
Purple-toned transparent plastic bottle with pump. The pump has another separate plastic stopper mechanism, so hopefully it’s safe enough for travel and won’t spill anywhere :)

Texture:
The oil is thicker than average. Thicker than Shu, much thicker than MAC or Kose Softymo White.

My General Review:
I was running out of MAC Cleanse Off Oil, but I swung to cheapo mode :D So I asked my bf in Singapore to find me a bottle of Kose Softymo White Cleansing Oil that I love a lot….but to no avail. So I switched to Biore Perfect Oil after reading the reviews.

My main concern was the oil will be too drying. I don’t know why, but that’s Biore’s image on me :P Maybe because it started with a scrub line here in Indonesia? Anyway the Oil is perfectly okay on my lately normal/combination skin. It take my water resistant sunscreen and eyeliner easily, but more effort is needed for the super stringent Majolica Majorca mascara (I did wear it with base underneath). A friend told me that this oil is kinda difficult to be emulsified, but I didn’t encounter that case. Just a splash of water works.

All in all, I can’t find any bad effects from this product. It’s scented with fruity fragrance (pear?), but I hope it’s okay for my skin because it’ll be washed out soon after it touches my face. It contains Alcohol but it’s very down in the ingredient list, so probably it’s not potent enough to cause trouble. My very sensitive skin hasn’t recognized any trouble after weeks of using this oil.

The bottle is kinda tiny though. It only contains 150ml of oil, instead of usual 200ml, or even 230ml for Kose Softymo White Cleansing Oil.

What Else You Need To Know:
Okay…so you know that I switched back and forth to drugstore and high end cleansing oil.

One may ask: is it important to get the pricier cleansing oil? …I’d say not really. Great drugstore cleansing oil cleanses real well. There are high end oil that couldn’t do its job. Drugstore oils often incorporates irritants and fragrance, but it also happens with high end oils.

Edited To Add!
Okay…drugstore or not, this stuff is not efficient enough to remove stubborn waterproof makeup. KATE Super Sharp Liner didn’t budge when I tried to clean it with this Biore c/o. I’ve since moved on to testing Kanebo Kracie Naive Deep Clear Oil (which is also a drugstore product!) and it’s a much better cleansing oil.

Application:
This is what the packaging says:

  1. Apply an appropriate amount of cleansing oil onto face and massage gently to dissolve makeup.
  2. When makeup and facial dirt have dissolved, rinse thoroughly with water.

But I personally love to emulsify it slowly with water, massage gently, then rinse it off with water. Just feels cleanser that way :P

Availability:
It’s not available in Indonesia. My bf bought it Guardian Singapore. If it’s not available locally in your country, try searching it on Asian online store such as Sasa or Webichi or Adam Beauty.

Price:
I didn’t remember the exact quote, but I vaguely remember it cost me around IDR120,000 (~US$15) for 150ml.

Ingredients:
Mineral oil, PEG-12 Laurate, Isododecane, Water, Isopropyl Palmitate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Polyglyceryl-2 Isostearate, Decyl Glucoside, Polysorbate 85, Gyceryl Oleate, Isostearic Acid, Isostearyl Glyceryl Ether, Isostearyl Glyceryl Oentaaerythrityl Ether, Myristyl Alcohol, Alcohol, Citric Acid, Phosporic Acid, BHT, Fragrance, Tocopherol.

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5. This works. Cleanses fairly well, but for a drugstore cleansing oil, Kose Softymo White is perfectly clean without stripping my skin and it’s more cost effective. Kose Softymo White does contain Orange Oil that can be a skin irritant, but my skin didn’t suffer so I hope it’s really okay.

Anyway, both Kose Softymo White and Biore deserve to be considered if you’re looking for efficient drugstore cleansing oil :)

3 out of 5. May be okay for simple water resistant suncreen but not strong enough to remove highly waterproof makeup.

MAC Cleanse Off Oil

Just a quick update of my previous review of MAC Cleanse Off Oil :) At that time my skin was too dry for this product, but now my skin has bounced back to normal/combination and this cleansing oil is great :) It’s efficient: cleanses well quickly without any greasy residue or overly tight skin. It deserves 5 out of 5 stars :)

Highly recommended if you have normal/combination to oily skin!

Just a quick glance to my previous month’s haul :)

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm

From http://www.clinique.com:
Lightweight makeup remover quickly dissolves tenacious eye and face makeups, sunscreens. Transforms from a solid balm into a silky oil upon application. Cleans thoroughly, rinses off completely. Non-greasy. Non-drying. Ophthalmologist Tested. For all skin types.

My Skin Type:
Ranging from very dry to normal/dry. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive.

Packaging:
Jar packaging, pretty and easy to use :P

Texture:
Solid balm, easy to scoop it from the jar, easy to be applied to the face too.

My General Review:
This is basically a solid cleansing oil. So this is definitely an option for people who thinks cleansing oil is messy.

I use it the same way I use my cleansing oils. I scoop it out, massage it into my dry skin (with dry hands), and the moment it touches skin, it transforms into non-greasy oil. Add a bit of water, emulsify, and rinse.

I can tell you that i took off waterproof makeup very well with less effort. No oily residue, so no need to follow with another cleanser. But it’s super dehydrating for my dry skin! It only need one application to ruin my skin :(

So I think it’s another Take The Day Off product that Clinique miss-marketed :P

Clinique stated that this product is suitable for all skin types, but I personally think it’s best for oily/very oily skin. Or Combination skin at the minimum.

Application:

  • Use fingertips to massage balm over dry skin.
  • Rinse well with warm water. Pat dry.
  • Follow with your 3-Step Skin Care System.

Availability:
Easily available at Clinique counters nationwide. SOGO, Metro, Debenhams, and other department stores.

Price:
I forget the price in Indonesia. I think’s it’s around IDR350,000 for 125ml. US$27 at Sephora.

What Else You Need To Know:
Other than fulfilling the standard fragrance-free policy in Clinique, it’s also paraben-free!

If you prefer a real cleansing oil (instead of the solid one like this), you can opt for Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Oil. It’s Asian exclusive though.

Ingredients:
Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Polyethylene, PEG-5 Glyceryl Triisostearate, Water (Aqua Purificata), Tocopherol, Phenoxyethanol [ILN28494]

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5. Easy to use, cleans waterproof makeup very well, portable.

Highly recommended for oilier skin. If you have drier skin, approach with caution. The Cleansing Milk version may be more suitable for drier skin.

MAC Cleanse Off Oil

MAC Cleanse Off Oil

From http://www.maccosmetics.com:
An industry-strength oil-based makeup remover that’s gentle on the skin. Botanically formulated with oils of olive fruit, evening primrose and jojoba seed and absolutely 100 percent mineral-oil free. Massages onto the skin to loosen all makeup, including waterproof mascara. Emulsifies into a lotion-type liquid with water: rinses off easily, no tissues required – and no residue! Protects with vitamin E. Skin softening and conditioning. Good for all skin types.

My Skin Type:
Ranging from very dry to normal/dry. Generally dehydrated, very sensitive.

Packaging:
Transparent pump bottle with locking mechanism (activated with a twist). Not sure it’s reliable for travel. It might leak since the lock is easy to be twisted.

Texture:
Very thin. Probably thinnest cleansing oil that I’ve tried.

My General Review:
I was really hesitant to try MAC Cleanse Off Oil. Many people uses it with very good results, sure. But most reviewers have combo/oily skin; so I was really afraid this will dry up my face. I finally took the plunge last week, as I’ve used up my Shu Uemura and the fact that my skin is more normal/combo. And it’s cheaper than Shu. And even though it contains irritant like Orange and Lavender oil; presumably to be used as fragrance component, the list started with great stuffs (Olive oil etc) so I’m hoping that the irritants is not strong enough to damage the skin (with the fact that this stuff will only stay on your skin for a minute or two).

Wrong decision! It only took 3 days to dry up my skin. I look dehydrated and dull, boohoo! It took off my makeup well though.

I may have to sell this, much too drying for my skin :(

Application:
1. Use 3-4 pumps of cleansing oil on dry hands
2. Spread gently and thoroughly over dry face.
3. Add a few drops of lukewarm water to face to emulsify.
4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Availability:
Easily available at MAC counters. In Jakarta, it means SOGO Plaza Senayan, Pondok Indah Mall 2.

Price:
IDR300,000 for 150ml. USD21 at Sephora.

Ingredients:
Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Olive fruit oil, PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, Squalane, Jojoba Seed Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, Rice Germ Oil, Tocopherol, Chamomilla (Matricaria) Flower Oil, Bitter Orange oil, Lavender Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Water, Rose Fruit Oil, Limonene

Overall Rating:
5 out of 5. Weird? Le sigh.

I don’t take away a point since this works well to remove makeup thoroughly without residue. It’s just too drying for me. Will recommend this wholeheartedly to oily/very oily skin.
